Happy Halloween! The time for dress up has arrived, and I’m here to inspire you with 3 DIY kid Halloween costume ideas: the first costume is a simple hand sewn cape (for all those little superheroes out there), the second, an insect costume, requires a little more time, but is perfect for those little ones vying to be something a little bit more creepy and crawly, and the third is a toddler favorite, a firetruck. Please follow me on Pinterest and show me your Halloween costumes. I’d love to see them!
Costume 1: Hand Sewn Cape for a Superhero Costume
- 2 yards of fabric
- 9×12 Acrylic Felt Sheet
- Straight Sewing Pins
- Velcro Dots
Step 1: Take two yards of fabric, and fold it in half width wise (hamburger bun style).
Step 2: Cut out a cape pattern (or use a dress up cape your kid already has), place it on top of the fabric, and pin the cape to the fabric.
Step 3: Cut out the cape. When you’re done, unpin the pattern from the fabric. Then re-pin the two cape shaped pieces of fabric back together.
Step 4: Sew the two cape shaped pieces of fabric together. Important Tip: Be sure not to sew all the way around the cape. Leave a hand sized opening near the bottom of the cape.
Step 5: Insert your hand into the opening at the bottom of the cape, and turn the cape inside out so that the stitches are hidden. Then, neatly sew the opening closed.
Step 6: Cut out a felt letter, attach it to the cape with straight pins, then sew the letter on to the cape.
Step 7: Sew velcro dots on the neck of the cape, put the cape on your little super hero, and watch them fly!
